Why Do Top Teams Struggle To Add Value As A Team?

The 7 Top Reasons

The last 12 months have put effective decision making and effective implementation of those decisions at a real premium. Making the right call in business is critical at any time, but in difficult times it can be the difference between still trading or not.

Which brings us to how top teams operate – or not. From our coaching and facilitation work in this area we have distilled the issues into a checklist which you might like to cross reference your own team’s performance against:

  1. If you spend a lot of time reporting on individual’s areas of responsibility with each member waiting for their turn, with most interrogation coming from the senior person, then the meeting it not adding value.
  2. If you find yourself talking about the same things over many months to no resolution– no value add.
  3. If there are people in the team you don’t respect or share the same business values with you will struggle to get into  value added conversation – it’s just too difficult
  4. If the meeting process (format timings, disciplines, admin, venue etc) is poor then the discussions, follow up and progress will also struggle
  5. If the Chair is ineffective then the meeting will be too, or at least very average.
  6. A major difficulty with many senior meetings is separating out two very different strands, operational review and strategic development. The former tends to crowd out the latter. Alarm bells should ring when you see strategy as an item on an operational agenda.
  7. The car park space problem. The team has huge and diverse opinions about trivial matters, Christmas parties (or not) and office furniture changes are two other time eaters, and very little insightful contributions to make about complex, debatable and difficult decisions.
